Why is it so? Some intriguing facts about aviation industry

These facts will tell you why flying is the safest mode of transport in the world

Everything connected with aircraft and aviation is well-planned and thought out. It’s perhaps the main reason why a plane is the safest mode of transport in the world. How much do we really know about aviation? There are countless interesting facts that may surprise you.

Why do some aircraft have curved wingtips?

Have you noticed the curves on wingtips of airliners that stick straight up? These are called winglets. They reduce wingtip vortices or twisters formed by the difference between the pressure on the upper and lower surfaces of an airplane’s wing. These strong airflows of vortices are strong enough to flip airplanes. Reduction in vortices also helps to cut down energy loss. In the past, when wingtips were straight, the airflow used to cause severe turbulence.

Why are most of the aircraft painted white?

Most of the airplanes are painted white because it accumulates less heat. Also, white paint helps prevent collisions with birds to some extent, as birds can detect the reflection from white surfaces better. It also helps to spot even small cracks and dents on the airplane.

Why are the windows on the plane round?

Originally, airplane windows were larger and had a square shape. Square windows have four weak spots where the stress of air pressure builds up, resulting in cracking of the windows. In round-shaped windows, pressure is distributed evenly and the likelihood of breaking is reduced significantly.

Can we open the aircraft door mid-air?

The answer is no. The doors are mechanically locked and are controlled by the pilot. Also the cabin pressure is higher than the outside air pressure and the cabin pressure seals them shut. On the ground, when the pilot has changed the control of the doors to manual mode, the cabin crew open the doors.

Pilot and Co-pilot eat different meals

Pilots and co-pilots are advised not to eat the same meals when they are working. If something is wrong with the meal like food poisoning, the other pilot can take over.

What are airport codes?

Airport codes like DEL (Delhi) and BOM (Mumbai) are issued by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The codes most often refer to the current or previous names of the cities. The codes are unique and are generally used by air traffic control and airlines in crafting their flight plans.
