10 air travel tips to follow for first-time flyers

It is quite normal to have apprehensions about air travel before your first flight. Here are a few things you should know to make your first flight as stress-free and comfortable as possible. Remember these quick tips so you can relax and know that you’re totally prepared.

1. Prepare the traveller’s checklist

This checklist may include the most basic things required for air travel, such as an ID card for domestic travel and a Passport for international travel, a copy of tickets, a boarding card, and a mobile phone with all the necessary travel apps.

2. Check in to your flight ahead of time

Make sure you reach the airport at least 2 or 3 hours before the scheduled departure. This will give you ample time to check in, collect your boarding pass, check in your baggage, go through the security screening and finally, be at the departure gate on time. Along with saving you valuable time, early check-in can get you a chance to choose a better seat.

3. Measure your baggage

Baggage rules change from time to time and also depend upon the destination and season of travel. However, the maximum weight permissible for a single piece of Check-in baggage is 32 kgs. Also, the total combined dimensions (length + breadth + height) of both pieces should not exceed 273cm (107 inches). The linear dimension of each piece should not exceed 62 inches. Cabin baggage or hand baggage should not exceed 7 kg. The dimensions of the cabin baggage should be 20″ x 14″ x 9″ (inch). It’s always best to measure your bag before you pack. If you stuff it to capacity, measure the suitcase again before you leave. And of course, if needed, you may purchase extra baggage before you fly.

4. Check airport monitors

While it is a good idea to subscribe to flight-status updates on your smartphone, airport monitors are still your best bet for the most up-to-date information. So, don’t forget to check them.

5. Essentials in your hand baggage

If your checked bags get lost or delayed, it’s important to have your essentials packed into your carry-on. Essentials may include medicines, phone, charger, and the necessary documents.

6. Check for banned/restricted items

Ensure that you are not carrying banned items in your hand baggage or checked-in baggage. Learn more about banned and restricted items here.

7. Book meals ahead

Flying with an empty stomach is not a very good idea. Guests can pre-book in-flight meals up to 24 hours before the departure of the flight. You may check out our a la carte menu on Express Café. Apart from meals, the Airline serves snacks, ready-to-eat food, and beverages under the ‘buy-on-board’ facility. Guests can purchase them on the go!

8. Get your documents right

The travel requirements are different for different destinations. Learn the updated travel rules of your destination country and get all the necessary documents ready at your disposal.

9. Choose your seat in advance

A window seat, aisle or a seat with extra legroom! You can select a seat based on your preference. Reserve your favourite seat at the time of flight booking, or later through the ‘Manage My Booking’ option on www.airindiaexpress.in.

10. Stay updated & organised

Staying organised with your things and updated with the information will help you save time, relax and enjoy your journey. Keep all your information and documents in one place. Pack your baggage neatly and remember what the things they carry.
