They say Surat never sleeps. The Diamond City of India has a long and illustrious history, right from its beginning when it was Surajpur or Suryapur. Since then, it has seen many invasions and battles, but at the end of it all, the city came back, vibrant and alive.
They all came to Surat first, looking for wares to trade – Mughals, Turks, Armenians, Portuguese, Dutch, French and English. River Tapti flowed through annals of history, bearing many stories told and keeping much more untold. Now Surat is the emporium of India, trading in diamond, gold and textiles.
Even while the world came looking for Surat, the city made a mark on the international flight map only recently. Air India Express is proud to have done that, because Surat featured for the first time in the international air route when Air India Express flight IX 172 from Sharjah touched down at the Surat Airport, carrying 75 passengers on February 16, 2019. The Sharjah-bound Air India Express flight IX 171 took off from Surat Airport with 186 passengers, marking another golden epoch in the history of the city.
Boeing 737-800 NG based in Sharjah, was used for the non-stop Sharjah-Surat service. Captain Ashish Gangurde and Captain Jeshmin Mistry along with cabin crew Ms. Purnima Kantharia, Ms. Manasvi Dadia, Ms. Megha Kirtania and Mr. Dhruv Raghav made history by operating the maiden flight.
This is the 47th non-stop direct connection that Air India Express is operating between India and the Gulf region. Right now, it connects 13 Middle East destinations to different parts of India.
Air India Express will operate four services in a week along this sector, in the upcoming summer schedule, which will be in operation from April 1, 2019. In the Summer Schedule, Sharjah-Surat services will be on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and Surat-Sharjah services will be on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
